Dr. Richard Heikkila, 48, and his wife Dawn, 46, were murdered at home on January 29, 1991. Their adopted son Matthew, 20, wrote “Mom” on one shotgun shell and “Mom and Dad” on another, loaded them into a Mossberg 20-gauge pump action shotgun and killed them with pointblank shots that tore away much of Mrs. Heikkila’s head. He stole their car and credit cards and took his girlfriend to dinner at the Windows on the World on top of the World Trade Center, then brought her back to Basking Ridge. She saw his mother’s body, was handcuffed, and threatened with death, but convinced Matthew to run away to Jamaica where he was captured on February 4, 1991. The jury did not accept his insanity defense and Heikkila was sentenced to two consecutive 30 year prison terms.

Site of New Jersey’s most notorious crime;  the kidnapping and death (murder?) of Charles and Anne Lindbergh’s son, 20-month old Charles Lindbergh, Jr.  The couple built their estate, called “Highfields”, in rural Hunterdon County where on March 21, 1932, a homemade collapsible ladder was used to gain entry to the second-floor nursery, and Charles, Jr. kidnapped. Col. Lindbergh tried running the investigation and paid the ransom, but on May 12, 1932, the child’s decomposed body was found less than five miles from home; he had died from a massive head injury. German émigré and former carpenter, Bruno Richard Hauptmann, was convicted of the crime and electrocuted on April 3, 1936.

On May 25, 1979, six-year old Etan Patz vanished on his way to school in Manhattan. A search failed to recover the little boy, or his body, and it became one of the most notorious disappearances in New York City’s history. One of the suspects was Pedro Hernandez, a convicted child molester, who worked in a store on Etan’s route to school. He moved to New Jersey and, 33 years later, implicated himself as the killer. A civil court found Hernandez responsible for Etan Patz’s death but there was not enough evidence to convict him in criminal court.

On September 3, 1925, Harrison Noel, 20, shot and killed Raymond Pierce, of Newark, and stole his cab. He drove to the house (above) of Joseph A. Bower, vice-president of the New York Trust Company. Four children were playing on the lawn and Noel grabbed 6-year old Mary Daly, threw her into the car, and sped away. The Bower’s chauffeur set off in pursuit but the black sedan got away and was later found abandoned. Noel was picked up by police and during questioning admitted to studying the Leopold & Loeb case, asked for $4000 for Mary’s return, and led them to her shallow grave by a quarry in Little Falls; she was killed by two bullets fired into her head. Noel, a former asylum inmate, was convicted and sentenced to death, but the decision reversed to commitment in the State Hospital at Greystone Park. Harrison Noel lived with his mother and father, a  wealthy New York attorney (whom he once threatened with a hatchet), at:

The most notorious crime in Montvale’s history occurred on November 28, 1976, when Harry De La Roche, Jr., an 18-year old cadet home from the Citadel, murdered his entire family. Using a .22,belonging to his father, he shot his parents, Harry, Sr., 44, and Mary Jane, 50, then shot and bludgeoned his two younger brothers, Ronnie, 15, and Eric, 12. Ronnie’s body was put inside a trunk in the attic (Harry later claimed that Ronnie killed everyone, then he killed Ronnie). De La Roche was convicted of the murders and on January 26, 1978, sentenced to four concurrent life terms.

On the night of May 11, 1833, Judge Samuel Sayre and his wife, Sarah, were murdered by Antoine LeBlanc, a 31-year old sailor recently hired to work on their farm. He killed the couple with a shovel then used a club to fatally bludgeon Phoebe, the Sayre’s servant or slave. LeBlanc robbed the house but was soon caught, tried, and sentenced to death. The execution took place on September 6, 1833, before an enormous crowd. LeBlanc was hanged using a gallows that jerked the condemned into the air rather than dropping him through a trapdoor. After he died, a local doctor experimented on the corpse, using electricity to make it twitch in various ways; a death mask was made and Le Blanc’s body dissected. His skin was stripped off, tanned, sold as souvenirs or made into wallets and purses. (Four years earlier, one of the notorious Edinburgh Body Snatchers, suffered a similar fate. William Burke was hanged, anatomized, and his skin tanned and made into souvenirs.)

The Sayre’s house is now a bank.

Home of the Rev. Edward Wheeler Hall (b. 1881), his wealthy wife, Frances Stevens Hall, and her brothers Henry and William (better known as “Willie”) Stevens. Rev. Hall was having an affair with Mrs. Eleanor Mills, who sang in the choir of his church, but on September 16, 1922 their bodies were found under a crabapple tree at De Russey’s Lane (now Franklin Boulevard) in Franklin Township. Both were shot in the heads with a .32; Mrs. Mill’s throat was also slit and her tongue reportedly cut out. Torn up love letters lay on the ground between them. Jane Gibson, an eccentric hog farmer dubbed “the Pig Woman”, claimed she witnessed Mrs. Hall and her brothers commit the murders. They were put on trial and Gibson, who was ill at the time, was rolled into court in her bed to give testimony. She told many different stories and on December 3, 1926, the defendants were found not guilty. The amount of press coverage devoted to the the Halls-Mills murders was unsurpassed till 1932 when the Lindbergh kidnapping became the new “Crime of the Century”. The murders of Rev. Hall and Mrs. Mills have never been solved.

Hall’s home is now the residence of the Dean of Rutgers University’s Douglass College.

Dr. Jascalevich returned to Argentina where he died in 1984 at the age of 57. The case ruined  Riverdell Hospital’s reputation and that same year, it was ordered demolished.
